Description
African wild dogs were once found across the African continent but their populations have declined due to loss of habitat and threats from farmers who fear for their livestock. They live in packs that are usually dominated by a monogamous breeding pair. The female has a litter of two to 20 pups, which are cared for by the entire pack. These dogs are very social, and packs have been known to share food and to assist weak or ill members. African wild dogs hunt in formidable, cooperative packs of six to 20 or more animals. Larger packs were more common before the dogs became endangered. Packs hunt antelopes and will also tackle much larger prey, such as wildebeests, particularly if their quarry is ill or injured.
These two African Wild Dogs were suddenly alert in a big way. What caught their eye were the lions not far away. Both dogs and lions were at the Denver Zoo, but not having access to a ticket to their native habitat, I was thrilled to see these African wild dogs come alive in captivity and behave in a way that they would in the wild!

Just took a spin through your great gallery! I have never seen an African wild dog yet, would love to get a chance in the wild sometime - love the way they exude intelligence (& have been reading recently about how they divy up tasks among the pack, set traps for prey)

Thanks a lot, Murray! They are smart (but I wouldn't want to get caught alone in the wild with a bunch of them!).
