Description
It was a blue sky day in winter, and this Bald Eagle was out hunting. He had flown from the tree where he and his sweetie had been adding sticks to their huge nest in preparation for a new family. Nowadays he spends most of his time in the tree or in the nest. He will be an attentive father and mate, bringing food to the family while she is sitting on eggs and caring for the babies, and the female will also occasionally hunt, leaving the male in charge of nest duty. Eagles return to the same nest and nesting territory each year. If they successfully produce young at a nest, they are likely to return to that nest year after year. Eagles are monogamous and mate for life, but if one of the pair dies, the other will select a new mate.
The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. It is not always so majestic in habits: it often feeds on carrion, including dead fish washed up on shore, and it steals food from Ospreys and other smaller birds. At other times, however, it is a powerful predator. Look for them soaring in solitude, chasing other birds for their food, or gathering by the hundreds in winter. Once endangered by hunting and pesticides, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection.
