Description
Wood ducks, like other birds, molt in the fall, and this male wood drake had just gotten his brand new feathers and was looking beautiful! Here he had just taken a dive under the water to look for food, and was shaking some of the water off afterwards. He looks a bit like he's saying, "Look at me, aren't I beautiful?"!
Uniquely beautiful, this duck of wooded ponds and river swamps has no close relatives, except for the Mandarin Duck of eastern Asia. The Wood Duck nests in holes in trees or in nest boxes put up around lake margins. They are one of the few duck species equipped with strong claws that can grip bark and perch on branches.
