Description
I had heard that a pair of Bald Eagles was hanging out a short drive from my house, and sure enough, I found them, but could not get close due to the tree they were in being on private property. So this photo was taken at a distance. Even though it was only October, they seemed to be looking to the future, because at one point this one took off and returned with this enormous stick to add to their nest. The average bald eagle nest is 4 to 5 feet in diameter and each year the adult pair will add 1-2 feet of new material to the nest. Bald eagles breed in the dead of winter and typically will lay eggs in January to February.
The Bald Eagle, with its snowy-feathered (not bald) head and white tail, is the national symbol bird of the United States, majestic in its appearance. It is not always so majestic in habits: it often feeds on carrion, including dead fish washed up on shore, and it steals food from Ospreys and other smaller birds. At other times, however, it is a powerful predator. For many decades, bald eagles were hunted for sport and for the "protection" of fishing grounds; also pesticides like DDT wreaked havoc on eagles and other birds, causing a serious decline in the number of bids. Since DDT use was heavily restricted in 1972, eagle numbers have rebounded significantly and have been aided by reintroduction programs. The result is a wildlife success story—the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has upgraded the birds from endangered to least concern.
