Description
This beautiful Barred Owl was flying from her handler to a post, in a raptor demonstration. The organization keeps birds that cannot be released into the wild due to either injury or imprinting on humans at birth. This one at least could still fly, and therefore was used to allow us photographers to take photos of her.
I personally have some doubts about organizations like that. Is it better to keep a bird in a cage for the rest of its life, than to let nature take its course? For me, I guess if the bird can still fly and can get regular exercise, like this one, then probably yes. Otherwise, I'm not so sure. But the owner and volunteers obviously cared very much and did their best.
Jesses and other similar paraphernalia were removed from this image in Photoshop.
From Cornell Labs' website: "The Barred Owl’s hooting call, “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?” is a classic sound of old forests and treed swamps. But this attractive owl, with soulful brown eyes and brown-and-white-striped plumage, can also pass completely unnoticed as it flies noiselessly through the dense canopy or snoozes on a tree limb. Originally a bird of the east, during the twentieth century it spread through the Pacific Northwest and southward into California."

Gorgeous image! People have so many different impacts on wildlife, so hard to know what the right thing to do might be on the rare occasions when you have a choice...
