Description
Bat Falcon (Falco rufigularis) taking off to catch a flying scarab beetle for breakfast. These beetles are big enough to provjde a few minutes of feeding. It's amazing to see how fast these falcons streak through the sky after their prey. They can also catch bats (although I haven't seen it) as well as small birds such as swallows.
The bat falcon is a dashing small falcon of tropical lowlands and foothills in tropical Mexico, Central and South America, and Trinidad. Prefers forest edge, adjacent semi-open areas with tall trees, buildings. Found at several Maya ruins in Mexico and northern Central America, also locally in towns. Looks dark overall with a contrasting white throat, and in flight can be confused with White-collared Swift. With a good view, note the rusty belly and βtrousers.β Hunts bats at dusk, but main food is small birds and large beatles caught in flight.
Photo taken on December 23, 2022, close to the Pacific coast of Mexico in Nayarit.
