Description
It was a beautiful spring day when I watched this honey bee (apis), as s/he busily flew from flower to flower, collecting nectar to bring back to the hive. Bees fascinate me, how they work together as a community to build their hive, and how they communicate with one another.
All honeybees are social and cooperative insects. There are three types of bees: Workers are the only bees that we generally see, and that is what you see in this photo.. They forage for food (pollen and nectar from flowers), build and protect the hive, clean, circulate air by beating their wings, and perform many other societal functions. The queen bee lays the eggs that will spawn the hive's next generation of bees. And finally, male bees are called drones -- they live in the hive in the summer but must leave in the winter when there isn't much food to share.
