Description
This graceful male Western Bluebird just flew out of the evergreen tree to bring a snack to the babies in his nest, which was a nest box put up by Colorado Parks and Recreation on a nearby tree. This time he brought a small morsel for the babies, and at other times he and the mom brought them a variety of insects. They were very busy, bringing in food, so the babies in there must have been getting big!
The original photo did not include the grass and only included one bare tree branch. I later added the grass and the evergreen needles, which were in the habitat, but they were a little further away from the bird than in this image. The addition of these elments adds beauty and a sense of place and habitat to the already vibrant image.
In partly open terrain of the American West, from valley farms and orchards to clearings in mountain pine forest, this bluebird is often seen swooping lightly to the ground to catch insects. Males are considerably brighter than the gray-brown, blue-tinged females, which are also beautiful. This small thrush nests in holes in trees or nest boxes and often gathers in small flocks outside of the breeding season to feed on insects or berries, giving their quiet, chortling calls.
Photo taken on June 18, 2024, near Boulder, Colorado.
