Description
I was excited to see and photograph this beautiful little Boreal Chickadee while on a trip to Minnesota! The Boreal Chickadee lives in coniferous forests of the far north year-round. Its boreal habits and sedentary lifestyle make it hard for most bird watchers to see without taking a trip to Canada or Alaska, and the Boreal Chickadee has gained a reputation as an excessively elusive bird.
When it’s not nesting season, these little birds travel and forage in small groups, sometimes with other songbirds such as kinglets. In summer and fall, they cache seeds and insects to help them get through the long, brutal winter. A hardy permanent resident, it survives the winter even as far north as the Arctic Circle. Like other chickadees, this species becomes much more quiet and inconspicuous during the nesting season.
Photo taken February 20, 2019, in the Sax-Zim Bog in Minnesota.
