Description
This Burrowing Owl was on a mullein stalk out in a field early in the morning, so the pupils are quite large. I got this photo through the car window, because it's less threatening to the birds if you stay in the car. I love watching these little owls; they're so feisty and entertaining.
Burrowing owls live underground, usually in burrows dug by prairie dogs, or some other creature. They like open spaces, such as grasslands, and feed on insects, small rodents, and small reptiles such as frogs. Their numbers have declined sharply with human alteration of their habitat and the decline of prairie dogs and ground squirrels.
