Description
Cliff Swallow chasing insects to feed his or her family in the nest. There was a huge flock of swallows near where they had built nests all along the side of a bridge. The air was alive with the sounds and movement of swallows as they streaked to and from the nests, catching bugs to feed the babies. I was happy to get this photo because swallows are so darn swift that it's a challenge to get them in flight! But I must admit it was fun. :)
Busy flocks of Cliff Swallows often swarm around bridges and overpasses in summer. Clusters of their intricate mud nests cling to vertical walls, and originally this swallow built its jug-shaped mud nests on the sides of cliffs; hence the name. These common, sociable swallows are nearly always found in large groups, whether they’re chasing insects high above the ground, preening on perches, or dipping into a river for a bath. A long-distance migrant, the cliff swallow winters in southern South America; it migrates in flocks, traveling by day.
