Description
Down the hatch! This Double-Crested Cormorant had been diving in the pond and successfully caught this very big crayfish for breakfast. He swallowed it whole, and you could see the bulge as it slipped down his or her throat. He was swimming next to a little island where hundreds of cormorants were nesting in the spring.
The Double-crested Cormorant is a seabird, whose habitat is near rivers, lakes and coastal areas.
Cormorants can be found widely across North America, from Alaska down to Florida and Mexico. They are relatives of frigatebirds and boobies and are a common sight around fresh and salt water across North America—perhaps attracting the most attention when they stand on docks, rocky islands, and channel markers, their wings spread out to dry. These solid, heavy-boned birds are experts at diving to catch small fish.
