Description
As we were returning from a small island to San Blas, a huge pod of Bottleneck Doplins suddenly appeared swmming right next to our boat. I was standing up, taking photos, and just as we were passing another boat, this dolphin jumped high in the air! From this angle, it looks as though he or she might be jumping right over the other boat. :)
This dolphin was captured mid-leap above the ocean's surface, with droplets of water sparkling around it. In the background, a boat with several people wearing life vests appears to be watching the dolphin's acrobatics.
Common bottlenose dolphins and other dolphins are thought to be some of the smartest animals on the planet, challenging the great apes (chimps and gorillas) for the top spot. They are also extremely curious and often approach people to investigate. Their intelligence is likely both a result of and a driver of their complex social structures. They generally live in small groups and organize complex, group behaviors when mating and hunting.
