Description
This female Downy Woodpecker flew in as I was watching another bird. It appears to be a tree that has some good insect snacks hidden away!
The smallest woodpecker in North America, common and widespread, although it avoids the arid southwest. An often acrobatic forager, this black-and-white woodpecker is at home on tiny branches or balancing on slender plant galls, sycamore seed balls, and suet feeders. Downies and their larger lookalike, the Hairy Woodpecker, are one of the first identification challenges that beginning bird watchers master. Its small size makes it versatile, and it may forage on weed stalks as well as in large trees. In winter it often joins roving mixed flocks of chickadees, nuthatches, and other birds in the woods.

Great capture, Judi, haven't seen a photograph of a Downy with it's wing open!

Thank you so much, Jurgen. I managed to get the pic just as she was landing. :)
