Description

Bald Eagle flying in the Colorado Rocky Mountains at sunrise. The golden light of dawn is lighting up both the eagle and the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

This is a composite of two photos -- of the eagle and of the mountains, taken separately and combined for this image. My son had wanted a photo of an eagle flying in front of the mountains, so this is a birthday gift for him!

The Bald Eagle has been the national emblem of the United States since 1782 and a spiritual symbol for native people for far longer than that. These powerful birds of prey are powerful predators and use their talons to fish, but they get many of their meals by scavenging carrion or stealing the kills of other animals. Look for them soaring in solitude, chasing other birds for their food, or gathering by the hundreds in winter. Once endangered by hunting and pesticides, Bald Eagles have flourished under protection.
