Description
Black-necked stilts are so elegant, with their very long legs. This image was captured early in the morning at a wildlife refuge.
Black-necked Stilts are among the most stately of the shorebirds, with long rose-pink legs, a long thin black bill, and elegant black-and-white plumage that make them unmistakable at a glance. They move deliberately when foraging, walking slowly through wetlands in search of tiny aquatic prey, and are found at all seasons at the margins of shallow water in very open country, especially where there is much marsh growth. When disturbed, stilts are vociferous, to put it mildly, and their high, yapping calls carry for some distance. They have the second-longest legs in proportion to their bodies of any bird, exceeded only by flamingos. They prefer grassy marshes, mudflats, pools, and shallow lakes, both fresh and alkaline.
Photo taken on August 11, 2020, at Arapahoe NWR in Colorado.
