Description
In Colorado, we have a lot of Red-tailed Hawks, and they stay here year round. It is the most common raptor by far in this state. But they all look a bit different -- some are lighter, some darker (light morphs and dark morphs), and in those categories there is still quite a bit of variation. I like the pose on this one, as he is flying from his perch on a pole.
From Cornell Ornithology's website: "Red-tailed Hawks soar above open fields, slowly turning circles on their broad, rounded wings. Other times you’ll see them atop telephone poles, eyes fixed on the ground to catch the movements of a vole or a rabbit, or simply waiting out cold weather before climbing a thermal updraft into the sky."
