Description
A couple of spoonbills were wading in a pond behind some reeds, swishing their strange-looking bills back and forth in the water. And when I had just given up that anything more was going to happen and was starting to pack up my gear, suddenly this bird flew off. I raced to unpack, and felt lucky to get this shot!
From Audubon's website: "Gorgeous at a distance and bizarre up close is the Roseate Spoonbill. Locally common in coastal Florida, Texas, and southwest Louisiana, they are usually in small flocks, often associating with other waders. Spoonbills feed in shallow waters, walking forward slowly while they swing their heads from side to side, sifting the muck with their wide flat bills."
