Description
This male Double-crested Cormorant is flying in with a stick for his mate to put into the nest, and she is greeting him with a show of appreciation. Every spring, cormorants perform this ritual of building up the nest, even if they're using a nest from the previous year. The males search for and bring in the sticks, and the female finds the best place to insert them into the nest. It gives me so much joy to watch the whole process, and it is especially fun to see the female putting on a show of appreciation for each stick!
Cormorants are very social birds, and frequently when I look at my photos after a shoot, I notice story lines that I wasn't able to catch while taking the photos. For instance, this last time there was an incident between a male and female where they seemed to be arguing, and then he flew off and shortly afterwards came back and they argued some more, and then a third cormorant joined in, but eventually the couple settled down and seemed to have resolved whatever was going on.
The Double-crested Cormorant is a seabird, whose habitat is near rivers, lakes and coastal areas.
Cormorants can be found widely across North America, from Alaska down to Florida and Mexico.

Marvelous capture! Honestly, you need to make a coffee table book full of your nature images. I would buy it! I like all your images, and I've shown them to my children and they love them too.
