Description
It was already April, but it had been snowing all night and still into the next day, and the birds were hungry. Especially little birds, which need energy from food to stay warm. So the goldfinches, which are quite small - smaller than regular finches - were out looking for something to eat. This handsome male American Goldfinch, all decked out in his spring breeding plumage, was awaiting his turn at the nyger feeder in my back yard. Isn't he beautiful?!
A typical summer sight is the handsome male American Goldfinch, with his brilliant yellow and shiny black feathers with a bit of white, flying over a meadow, calling perchickory as he bounds up and down in flight. Females and all winter birds are a more dull brownish color but identifiable by their conical bill; pointed, notched tail; wingbars; and lack of streaking. During molts they look bizarrely patchy. In winter, flocks of goldfinches congregate in weedy fields and at feeders, making musical and plaintive calls. In most regions this is a late nester, beginning to nest in mid-summer, perhaps to assure a peak supply of late-summer seeds for feeding its young.
