Description
Every once in a while I get to watch my friend and his friends fly their falcons, and it is always a treat to watch these magnificant birds. This Gyrfalcon is powerful, climbing up to over a 1000 feet in altitude with ease, and higher if she wanted to, all done quickly on her strong wings. And then she can hurtle down at unbelievable speed if there's something to catch below, so fast that you will still be looking up, trying to see her when she's already way down low, now just cruising.
The largest falcon in the world, the ghostly Gyrfalcon is a fierce predator in the High Arctic, where it chases down ptarmigans in flight or plummets from the sky at breathtaking speeds to strike prey to the ground. Most Gyrfalcons remain in the far north all year; only a few come as far south as the Canadian border in winter, providing thrills for birders. Nesting on remote cliffs in the far reaches of Canada and Alaska, Gyrfalcons in North America are safe from most human disturbance but face challenges from a warming climate. Variable in color, Gyrs may be blackish, gray, or stunningly white.
