Description
This beautiful Harris's Hawk imprinted on humans as a baby, so cannot be let go into the wild, as he would not survive. The hawk is being kept by an organization that takes care of raptors and uses them as ambassadors to educate children and adults.
I had the opportunity of photographing him as part of a workshop. This is my favorite shot, of him flying by above a wintry field.
A handsome hawk of the arid Southwest, Harris's Hawk is a standout with its striking patterns of brown, red, yellow, and white. The most social of North American raptors, these birds cooperate at nests and hunt together as a team in groups of three or more. When hunting, a group of hawks surround their prey, flush it for another to catch, or take turns chasing it, powerfully, pursuing prey in agile flight even through dense brush. This hawk's social nature and relative ease with humans has made it popular among falconers and in education programs.
Photo taken October 11, 2019, near Castle Rock, Colorado.
