Description
This male Burrowing Owl flew straight towards me as I was photographing him. He's the dad of six young owlets, and was busily hunting for crickets and other treats to feed those hungry beaks! Amazingly, he was not the least bit nervous around us, even though a group of us was standing on the trail quite close to him, and he would sometimes even perch less than 4 feet from us!
Burrowing owls are born underground in burrows, often these are burrows built by prairie dogs. They hunt crickets, grasshoppers, and other bugs, as well as small mammals such as mice, and small reptiles. They are excellent parents, bringing food to their babies until the young ones are hunting bugs for themselves, and even afterwards for a while. Burrowing owls typically migrate to Central America during the winter.
Photo taken on July 3rd, 2019, near Ft Collins, Colorado.
