Description
Killdeer give themselves away with their far-carrying, excited "kill-deer, kill-deer, kill-deer" call given when they fly, and this one was no exception. They are quite timid around people and don't let you get too close, always flying a little bit further away when you try. I was happy to get a photo of this one with reflection in some beautiful light as s/he foraged near the shore.
Widespread, common, and conspicuous, the graceful Killdeer calls its name as it flies over farmland and other open country. These tawny birds of the plover family run across the ground in spurts, stopping with a jolt every so often to check their progress, or to see if they’ve startled up any insect prey. Like other plovers, this species is often found at the water's edge, but it also lives in pastures and fields far from water. At times, it nests on gravel roofs or on lawns. Many a person has been fooled by the bird's "broken-wing" act, in which it flutters along the ground in a show of injury, luring intruders away from its nest.
