Description
Streak-backed Oriole on top of an upside-down pineapple plant. I love the way he looks there, like he's king of the castle! He was looking around for bugs to catch in the early morning, and would fly up to grab one and then sit back down, waiting and watching for another.
The streak-backed oriole (Icterus pustulatus) is a medium-sized species of passerine bird from the icterid family (the same family as many blackbirds, meadowlarks, cowbirds, grackles, and others, including the New World orioles). It is native to Central America and Mexico and is an occasional visitor to the United States. Dry tropical forests, from northwestern Mexico to Costa Rica, are the usual haunts of this colorful oriole. The bird is a rare stray into the Southwest US, mostly southern Arizona and southern California. Most records in the past were for fall and winter, but recently a couple of pairs have stayed through the summer and have even nested in Arizona.
Photo taken on December 16, 2022, in Nayarit, Mexico in a field on a farm.
