Description
Kingfishers have a loud call when they're flying that identifies them, and this little female was no exception. I noticed her zip into the water to try to catch something. Luckily for me, she was unsuccessful the first time, which allowed me to now give her my full attention for her second attempt, when she caught the little fish in this photo!
The Belted Kingfisher is one of the few bird species in which the female is more brightly colored than the male. Kingfishers nest in burrows along earthen banks and feed almost entirely on aquatic prey, diving to catch fish and crayfish with their heavy, straight bills. They can often be seen flying near streams or other bodies of water, calling their rattllng call as they go. Found almost throughout North America at one season or another, the Belted Kingfisher is the only member of its family to be seen in most areas north of Mexico.
Photo taken on April, 2016, near Kearney, Nebraska.

Awesome capture Judi, I am so jealous, I can never be fast enough to capture a good shot of our Kingfishers they are just so fast and timid. l/f/t
Judi Dressler replied:
Thanks very much, Sandra! I agree, they are so elusive and fast; I rarely get any shots of them and then they are usually no good!
