Description
This Little Blue Heron couple was photographed at a wetland area off the coast of South Carolina. The area was swarming with various nesting shorebirds, all busy building nests and sitting on eggs. I particularly like this image since the eggs are so clearly visible, and mom and dad seem to be having a little discussion. "What else do you need from me, Honey?", he might be asking.
From Cornell's website: "A small, dark heron arrayed in moody blues and purples, the Little Blue Heron is a common but inconspicuous resident of marshes and estuaries in the Southeast. They stalk shallow waters for small fish and amphibians, adopting a quiet, methodical approach that can make these gorgeous herons surprisingly easy to overlook at first glance. Little Blue Herons build stick nests in trees alongside other colonial waterbirds. In the U.S., their populations have been in a gradual decline since the mid-twentieth century."
Photo taken on April 20, 2018, near the South Carolina coast.
