Description
One of my favorite things to see in early summer is moms with babies. This female Mallard looks proud of her little family, don't you think? They swam out away from shore, and under a grey sky the water looks white in the photograph, which makes for an elegant image!
Abundant over most of the northern hemisphere, the Mallard is the most familiar wild duck to many people, and the ancestor of most strains of domesticated ducks. In many places this species has managed to domesticate itself, relying on handouts in city parks. The ancestral wild Mallard was a trim, elegant, wary, fast-flying bird. Mallards have long been hunted for the table, and almost all domestic ducks come from this species.
