Description
This Yellow-bellied Marmot family did not seem to be bothered by me taking photos. They seemed to be as interested in watching us as we were in watching them! Taken on top of 14K' peak Mt Evans in Colorado.
Yellow-bellied Marmot (Marmota flaviventris) Marmots are one of the largest members of the squirrel family and are widespread in western North America. They are associated with alpine meadows, but they can live in suitable habitat from high elevations down to the lower foothills. Although it is most commonly seen sprawled on a boulder above timberline, basking in the summer sunshine, this housecat-sized, brownish-yellow furball is tougher, and much more alert and canny, than it seems. Marmots are true hibernators, turning in each year around September and reappearing again the following April or May.
Photo taken on August 19, 2016, near the top of Mount Evans in Colorado.
