Description
Full moon rising at the edge of Mount Blanca in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, with Sandhill Cranes flying overhead, during "blue hour" just after sunset.
The cranes are headed to ponds nearby, where they spend the night and are generally safe from predators. During the day, the birds fatten up in nearby cornfields, and soon will fly to their wintering grounds in New Mexico.
Mt Blanca includes Blanca Peak, which is the fourth-highest peak of the Rocky Mountains located in the southern Sangre de Cristo range not far from Alamosa, CO. It is known to the Navajo people as the Sacred Mountain of the East. It is associated with the color white, and is said to be covered in daylight and dawn and fastened to the ground with lightning.
Photo taken on October 30, 2020, in the Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge, Colorado.

Judi, my dear lady, I have utmost admiraton for the way in which you tell beautiful, dramatic stories in so many of your images. There's a big difference between an image that is just post-card pretty on the one hand and the one that tells a great story on the other. You, my dear Judi, are an eloquent pictorial story-teller. Keep it up.
