Description
Female Mallard stretching her wing in early morning light in a stream. She was all by herself, doing a little preening, perhaps wanting some privacy before she joined the group of male ducks further down the stream. Mallards are often overlooked for their beauty due to being found almost everywhere in North America, but they are in fact quite beautiful.
Abundant over most of the northern hemisphere in ponds and parks as well as wilder wetlands and estuaries, the Mallard is perhaps the most familiar of all wild ducks. In many places this species has managed to domesticate itself, relying on handouts in city parks. Mallards have long been hunted for the table, and almost all domestic ducks come from this species.
