Description
Screech Owls are active at night and spend most of the day sleeping, so this female was doing just that. She opened one eye briefly when I first showed up but that was it. An owl has to get her sleep, after all. At least she was kind enough to sit in the opening of her nest rather than down inside; which I appreciated very much, and she looks so beautiful, sitting there in the morning sun. But she is very well camouflaged, and most people would not notice her since she blends in so well with the tree and is a quite small owl.
From Cornell Labs' website: "If a mysterious trill catches your attention in the night, bear in mind the spooky sound may come from an owl no bigger than a pint glass. Common east of the Rockies in woods, suburbs, and parks, the Eastern Screech-Owl is found wherever trees are, and they’re even willing to nest in backyard nest boxes. These supremely camouflaged birds hide out in nooks and tree crannies through the day, so train your ears and listen for them at night."
Photo taken on December 25, 2020, in Littleton, Colorado.
