Description
I felt immensely privileged to get to watch and photograph the birth of this little wild Mustang foal. I kept my distance, but could see generally what was going on. It took about a half hour for the the baby to stand up after several failed attempts, and this pic shows her unsteadily standing up for the very first time in her life! Shortly thereafter, she fell down(!), but the next time it only took a few minutes before s/he was up again; her perseverance paid off. During the birth, the stallion father kept all horses away that were not family members, but the mare's yearling was next to her throughout the birth, and a couple of other horses were also allowed to stay. It was quite emotional to witness the whole thing...
Wild Mustangs are free-roaming horses of the American west that were originally brought to the Americas by the Spanish. We think of Mustangs as wild horses, but because they are descended from once-domesticated horses, they are actually feral horses. This free-roaming horse population is managed and protected by the BLM, the Bureau of Land Management. There is some controversy surrounding the sharing of land and resources by the free-ranging mustangs with the livestock of the ranching industry. There is also dispute about the methods with which the federal government manages the wild horse numbers.
