Description
This little Northern Hawk Owl was always perched at the very top of tall trees during my trip to Minnesota, as this image shows. I had gone hoping to photograph one of these little owls, and was excited to see and photograph one!
An owl of boreal forests, the Northern Hawk Owl looks like an owl but behaves like a hawk. Its oval body, round face and yellow eyes, and the dark parentheses on each side of the face are distinctly owl. Rather hawklike in both appearance and behavior, it often hunts by day. This solitary bird tends to stick to the boreal forest, but during some winters it moves south into the northern United States, delighting birders near and far.
Photo taken on February 21, 2019, in the Sax Zim Bog of MN.
