Description
Pied-billed Grebes are such cute little water birds; quite shy. This pair seemed content to swim together near the reeds, diving occasionally for a snack in the golden early light.
The Pied-billed Grebe is the most widespread grebe in the New World, and the most familiar in most temperate parts of North America. These small brown birds have unusually thick bills that turn silver and black in summer. Far less sociable than most grebes, they are almost never in flocks, sometimes found alone on small marshy ponds. These expert divers inhabit sluggish rivers, freshwater marshes, lakes, and estuaries. They use their chunky bills to kill and eat large crustaceans along with a great variety of fish, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates. Often secretive in the breeding season, hiding in marsh, Pied-billed Grebes announce their presence with loud, far-reaching calls.
