Description
I love watching Reddish Egrets, as they are such active hunters, chasing fish, jumping in the air and putting on a great show! This one was no exception and kept me quite entertained. This particular egret is a mix of dark morph and white morph -- you can see the white feathers mixed in with the darker grey ones, so s/he probably had one dark morph parent and one white morph parent.
In the stately and dignified world of herons, Reddish Egrets are the swashbuckling cousins, more tied to salt water than any of our other herons or egrets. These big, cinnamon and steely gray birds put on a show as they forage in shallow saltwater. They race back and forth, open and shut their wings, stir up sediment with their feet, and even swoop low over the water in flight—all in pursuit of small fish. In any plumage, the two-toned bill and shaggy head and neck feathers give them a distinctive look. Reddish Egrets also have a rarer, all-white plumage or "morph"; over most of range, dark birds are far more numerous.
Photo taken on March 7, 2021, on S Padre Island, Texas.
