Description
I love the bright patches of red everywhere when a flock of Red-winged Blackbirds hits the air, and was tickled to get this photo of a huge flock of them flying near a stream. You can see a hawk of some kind near the tree at the right, which is possibly the reason these birds all took off at once.
The image has a bit of a painterly effect I like, and which came straight out of the camera; i.e., there was no post processing to bring that about. It was far away and just came out like that!
One of the most abundant birds across North America, and one of the most boldly colored, the Red-winged Blackbird is a familiar sight atop cattails, along soggy roadsides, and on telephone wires. Glossy-black males have scarlet-and-yellow shoulder patches they can puff up or hide depending on how confident they feel. Females are a subdued, streaky brown, almost like a large, dark sparrow. Their early and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring.
Photo taken on January 8, 2019, in Bosque Del Apache NWR in New Mexico

Lovely shot and perspective Judi, Red-winged Blackbirds are already gone from our place (Laval, Québec, Canada) to the South, maybe there is still others places but at my place I don't see them, I will wait their comeback in the spring. Likes + Favorites.
