Description
Russet-crowned Motmot with a bug he caught for breakfast. This beautiful bird, with two little feathers at the end of his long tail, is a species of motmot native to north-western Mexico and central Guatemala. It is a year-round resident of the tropical and subtropical dry broadleaf forests and scrubland. Motmots are a part of the order Coraciiformes which also includes bee-eaters, rollers, todies, and kingfishers. The russet-crowned motmot is one of seven species in the genus Momotus of the family Momotidae.
A colorful bird with a distinctive red ring around its eye and a long tail is perched on a branch, holding an insect in its beak. Dappled sunlight filters through the foliage, highlighting the bird's vibrant plumage and the texture of the branch.
I was very happy to finally spot and be able to photograph a beautiful motmot in the small town of Lo de Marcos, Mexico, where we have been staying for a few months. The photo was taken early in the morning in the yard of a farm here.
Photo taken on April 23, 2024 in Lo de Marcos, Nayarit, Mexico.
