Description
Little Sandlerings like this one were constantly running towards the waves and back again, nibbling at this and that, and hanging out with the gulls on the beach on South Padre Island. I loved watching them. This shot was taken early in the morning against the sunrise, when the beach was deserted.
From Cornell's website: "The Sanderling’s black legs blur as it runs back and forth on the beach, picking or probing for tiny prey in the wet sand left by receding waves. Sanderlings are medium-sized “peep” sandpipers recognizable by their pale nonbreeding plumage, black legs and bill, and obsessive wave-chasing habits. These extreme long-distance migrants breed only on High Arctic tundra, but during the winter they live on most of the sandy beaches of the world."
Photo taken on October 8, 2017 on South Padre Island.
