Description
Barn Owl seen on top of a pole in a neighbor's yard north of Boulder, Colorado. She was very fast at catching this vole! I took a couple of shots of her without the vole and then she flew off and was gone for a shot, and in the next shot, there she was again, this time with this vole in her beak! It was too dark to see anything but just a possible shape on the pole with just our eyes.
Owls are completely silent when they fly, and catch their prey with their excellent hearing. They are excellent hunters!
From Cornell Labs: "Ghostly pale and strictly nocturnal, Barn Owls are silent predators of the night world. Lanky, with a whitish face, chest, and belly, and buffy upperparts, this owl roosts in hidden, quiet places during the day. By night, they hunt on buoyant wingbeats in open fields and meadows. You can find them by listening for their eerie, raspy calls, quite unlike the hoots of other owls. Despite a worldwide distribution, Barn Owls are declining in parts of their range due to habitat loss."

I think anyone but the vole would feel love at first sight with this incredible image. The lighting and detail are amazing, and the heart-shaped face and dead prey are an interesting contrast.
