Description
Every winter, thousands of Snow Geese ( chen caerulescens ) winter over at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, before migrating further north for the summer. They spend the nights in lakes and ponds to be safe from predators, and during the day they fatten up in the nearby corn fields, along with sandhill cranes.
In this image, a large mass is flying against a backdrop of the nearby hills, where their intense whiteness stands out beautifully against the dark of the background. It reminds me of confetti at a celebration!
Getting to observe huge flocks of Snow Geese descend from the sky, amid a cacophony of honking, is an amazing experience -- a little like standing inside a snow globe! These loud geese can cover the ground in a snowy blanket, since often there are thousands of them together. Among them, you might see a darker version —a color variant called a Blue Morph or a “Blue Goose.” Snow Geese are now among the most abundant waterfowl on the continent.
