Description
An eagle or falcon flying over was probably the reason for this massive Snow Goose explosion at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. It was a spectacular and deafening swirling cacophony as thousands of Snow Geese took to the air simultaneously! They had been hanging out and eating in the corn fields. I clicked my shutter in amazement as the birds flew overhead.
I used Topaz Impression digital software to give a heightened sense of the swirling mass.
Getting to observe huge flocks of Snow Geese descend from the sky, amid a cacophony of honking, is an amazing experience -- a little like standing inside a snow globe! These loud geese can cover the ground in a snowy blanket, since often there are thousands of them together. Among them, you might occasionally see a darker version —a color variant called a Blue Morph or a “Blue Goose.” Snow Geese are now among the most abundant waterfowl on the continent. Some of them winter over at Bosque del Apache NWR from approximately mid November through mid February, along with thousands of Sandhill Cranes.
