It took my breath away to watch the 2017 solar eclipse! We had driven to Glendo State Park in Wyoming, leaving the house at 3:30 a.m. to arrive at 9:15 (bumper to bumper at the exit), just in time to set up our tripods.
This image shows the corona of the sun during totality, when the moon was directly in front of the sun, and is a composite of 5 separate images taken at different shutter speeds. I also superimposed a dark image of the moon in front, rather than having total blackness. The corona can only be seen during an eclipse of the sun, because otherwise the sunlight is so bright that we can't see it. You can see some bending of plasma rays, due to the sun's magnetic fields. An unbelievably beautiful show!
Photo taken on August 21, 2017, at 11:47 a.m. in Glendo State Park, WY.
