Description
A pair of Mute Swans was hanging out together in a pond nearby, looking beautiful! I parked my car and was photographing through the window; fortunately it did not seem to bother them. They followed each other around and stayed close, both preening or both fishing at the same time.
Mute Swans are not native to North America. Brought in from Europe as an ornamental addition to parks and estates, the Mute Swan has established itself in some parts of North America, mainly in the northeast. This swan swims with its long neck curved into an S and often holds its wings raised slightly above its back. Not really "mute", its voice is hoarse and much quieter than those of our native swans, but its wingbeats may be heard as much as a mile away. This swan's aggressive behavior and voracious appetites often disturbs local ecosystems and displaces native species.
