On a trip to southern Texas, I saw so many Turkey Vultures circling overhead in the sky. Despite the 90+ F degree temperatures in the middle of the day, when most birds were too hot to flap their wings, these vultures soared overhead on the breeze on their large black wings, hardly ever needing to exert themselves. I really like the pose of this one, as he was about to jump off and attack a dead carcass below.
From Cornell Labs: "These birds ride thermals in the sky and use their keen sense of smell to find fresh carcasses. They are a consummate scavenger, cleaning up the countryside one bite of their sharply hooked bill at a time, and never mussing a feather on their bald heads."
