Description
The Violet-crowned Hummingbird is a beautiful large elegant Mexican species of hummingbird with a glittering purple crown and long red bill. It barely reaches the southeastern U.S. It is also one of the vew few hummingbirds without a gorget (throat patch).
These birds occur at middle elevations in canyons, where they have a particular affinity for sycamore trees. They feed on nectar and small insects, often visiting hummingbird feeders. One description of the violet-crowned hummingbird's song is "a series of very high, thin, descending notes seew seew seew seew seew". It is sung from an exposed perch.
