Description
Adult Reddish Egrets have two color morphs: a rare all-white morph, and a darker bluish and reddish morph. A small percentage of reddish egrets on the Gulf Coast are the white morph variety, and this is one of them. Isn't s/he gorgeous?!! Here s/he is hunting for little fish in the pools left over when the tide is out on the beach. S/he caught several while I watched - not bad! In this image, s/he is walking forward, so one foot is visible above the water.
In the stately and dignified world of herons, Reddish Egrets are the swashbuckling cousins. These big birds put on a show as they forage in shallow saltwater. They race back and forth, open and shut their wings, stir up sediment with their feet, and even swoop low over the water in flight—all in pursuit of small fish. The two-toned bill and shaggy head and neck feathers give them a distinctive look.
Photo taken on March 7, 2021 on South Padre Island, Texas.
