Description
These wild mustangs travel in bands. They are very social, and here they are hanging out together, with their heads on each others' backs on the prairie, just taking a break.
Wild Mustangs are free-roaming horses of the American west that were originally brought to the Americas by the Spanish. We think of Mustangs as wild horses, but because they are descended from once-domesticated horses, they are actually feral horses. This free-roaming horse population is managed and protected by the BLM, the Bureau of Land Management. There is some controversy surrounding the sharing of land and resources by the free-ranging mustangs with the livestock of the ranching industry. There is also dispute about the methods with which the federal government manages the wild horse numbers.
Photo taken on June 3rd, 2018, in NW Colorado.

Many thanks to the buyer from Broomfield, Colorado, who bought an acrylic print of this image on August 22, 2022!

This image reminds of the movie UNBRANDED that is based on a true story. A docu-drama of sorts, Judi. A story about four young men that are determined to ride wild mustangs from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. It also chronicles the plight of wild mustangs of today. I think you would really enjoy it!....Fav / like

Nice image Judi...like your description which is absolutely true! I retired from the BLM and used to round up many of these guys back in the 70's but management has become a real challenge in today's world.
Judi Dressler replied:
Thanks, Gary. So you were rounding them up with the BLM... so sad that it must be done, but I understand there needs to be enough food and water for everyone...
