Description
Yellow-Rumped Warblers are not seen around where I live most of the year, but in spring you can be sure to see them everywhere, flitting about at great speed from branch to branch. At first they seem to be plain grey, but occasionally you see a flash of yellow, and upon closer inspection, if one of them holds still for just a few seconds, you can see yellow on the rump, the top of the head, and the sides. This one has a white patch on the throat, which means he's a "Myrtle" subspecies, versus the "Audubon" subspecies which has a yellow patch on the throat.
Flashing its trademark yellow rump patch as it flies away, calling check for confirmation, this is one of our best-known warblers. Shrubs and trees fill with the streaky brown-and-yellow birds and their distinctive, sharp chips. Though the color palette is subdued all winter, spring molt brings a transformation, leaving them a dazzling mix of bright yellow, charcoal gray and black, and bold white. It is the main winter warbler in North America.
