I don't see Common Mergansers here as often as the hooded ones, so I was thrilled to see several of them swimming in a small river where I had gone early in the morning to take some pictures. After hanging out for some time, they suddenly decided it was time to leave, and all took off at once.
This image is of a male with his green head and red serrated beak. The elegant gray-bodied females have rich, cinnamon heads with a short crest, and in the early summer you may see the wonderful sight of a female with several babies on her back and in tow. This fish-eating duck is the typical merganser of small rivers or the shorelines of freshwater lakes. Its flocks are usually small, but these may combine into big concentrations sometimes at large reservoirs. These large ducks nest in hollow trees. Common Mergansers living along rivers may spend hours resting on rocks or on shore.
